CLLP Student Assistantships: Students accepted into the CLLP program will receive paid hands-on experiences with local organizations that will put the skills that linguistics students are developing into practice. Students will spend a semester working on a small-scale project under the supervision of their mentor. The types of community-based projects and professional experiences include, but are not limited to: development of language teaching resources, community literacy support, teaching opportunities, editing, AI research, documentation of Native American languages, and assisting with organizing and running local workshops/conferences.

Fresno State Career Readiness Digital Badge Program: Students will work with the Career Development Center to earn one of nine digital badges that showcase your career readiness skills (e.g., Career and Professional Development, Critical Thinking, Information Literacy, Leadership, Professionalism, Teamwork, Technology, Verbal Communication, Written Communication). These digital badges can help students stand out by showcasing their skills and achievements in a professional way (e.g., on their resume or LinkedIn profile).

Career Readiness workshops: Students will be encouraged to participate in workshops provided by the Department of Linguistics as well as the Career Development Center. Topics may include but are not limited to: career pathways in linguistics, resume writing, job interview skills, career readiness skills developed in linguistics, etc. 

Linguistics Alumni Talk Series: This talk series that showcases different career pathways of our Linguistics graduates in education, industry (e.g., data analysis, programming), administration, management, etc. The series will also provide current and prospective students with opportunities to expand their professional networks.

To Apply

• Be a Linguistics/CogSci major

• GPA: 3.0 or above

• Completed LING 10, 11 or 100; and at least one semester’s worth of major courses (some projects may require completion of specific courses - see project descriptions)

• Submit a statement of interest including commitment to service & a career objective statement

• Provide a copy of your resume that includes career goals, work experience, education, volunteer experience and specialized skills

• Rank interest in projects

Fall 2026 Project Descriptions

​

When accepted to the program, students are expected to:

• Commit to your assigned project for one semester (students will receive a $500 stipend, equivalent to 30 hours, but hours will vary depending on the project)

• Participate in one of Fresno State Digital Badge programs

• Participate in the career readiness workshops

• Complete a pre/post career readiness survey 

• Share your experiences in either a department colloquium, high impact practices symposium, or a department blog post. 

• Students who complete the program will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the semester

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview with the program coordinators and/or partner organization early Fall.
